“ShakeltUp“- the completely improvised Shakespearean theatre

By Ahmad Alhadi Almoustafa and Amon Tuchen

On October 10, the well-known theatre group “ShakeltUp“ from London came to visit our school and to perform their famous improvised Shakespeare show for the second time. The show began at 9:55 a.m. in our auditorium. Students in grades 10 to 12 were allowed to attend the show and experienced a real highlight. But not only that, the audience could also decide both the setting and the genre of the play and was repeatedly included in the plot. Compared to last year, the group performed a “history“ that – of course – the crowd had chosen, which is a theatre piece with action, drama and historical accurate details. Like last time, the students were given a small sheet of paper on which they either had to write down their own sentences or had to complete the beginning of given sentences. It was an incredible show which led to lots of laughter throughout the auditorium.

Additionally, the names of the characters were improvised and even the audience was allowed to chose a name for a character and came up with the name ,,Merlin‘‘ at the end.

The show was performed in Shakespearean style by five actors, who remarkably improvised everything while standing in front of the entire audience. It impressed each of us a lot!

At the end, the group gave all students plenty of time and allowed them to ask any kind of question.

After a year, the visit from “ShakeItUp“ has just shown us the unbelievable, accomplished and extraordinary talent of this group again.

We want to say that we are deeply grateful for the show and for everything that we learned from it. We also look forward to their next visit to our school.
